“Nice thighs mummy, hahaha!” There is no greater pleasure for my daughter than making fun of me and to smack me as hard as she can on my legs. About a 100 times. I had just decided I needed some ‘me-time’ and I felt like laying down on the sofa with a good book. Ha. No way. Here comes my 8 year old, with tiny sparkles in her eyes that can only mean one thing: annoy mummy. Taking me-time… Seriously? That is a luxury granted by your children; it is not something you can take yourself. After twelve years of parenting I still haven’t grasped that very basic family rule.
About to turn around, to give my daughter some piece of mind, I suddenly recall the commitment I made to myself just before the end of 2016… Ah. Yes. P.a.t.i.e.n.c.e. My theme for 2017.
After years of torturing myself (and others…) with New-Year-Resolutions-Lists, I am planning to make a change this year. Just like dinosaurs, trifles and aerobic legwarmers, New Year Resolutions are a thing from the past. For years in a row, ‘going-to-the-gym was definitely at the top of my endless list of things I thought needed to be done in the year ahead.
Of course, the first week was fabulous. I went to the gym every day. Burpees, treadmills and high impact step classes; I felt I almost lived in the gym.
But with all great resolutions, also this one eventually ended up in the ‘nah, maybe next year’ drawer.
I do feel excited though about my theme that I believe will be guiding me through 2017. Patience is something that has been lacking last year. Being impatient didn’t serve me at all, actually. I missed out on establishing a loving relationship with my kids. And I went nuts (on the inside, of course) when queueing at the check out counter at supermarkets.
So patience it is… And I can’t wait to be able to smile happily at the groceries in my shopping cart when I queue and to wave happily at other road users who try to cut me off. This will involve practice. A lot of it. Hm. Perhaps a theme for 2018?
So what is your theme for 2017? What is your year going to look like? When you review the past year; what was missing? What was stressful? And why? Perhaps these thoughts and insights will give you clues about your theme. Flow, Clarity, New Beginning, Joy, Passion, Explore and Embrace, to name a few, could all be very inspiring 2017 themes. Think about yours… Please do share!
